Phoenix Scores Number One Alternative Hit

French act Phoenix have scored the Number One spot on the Modern Rock chart this week with "1901," the current single from the band's latest album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. According to FMQB, Phoenix is only the fourth band signed to an independent label, in this case Glassnote Records, to reach the top of the Modern Rock chart in its 20-year history, after the Offspring, Everlast and the Silversun Pickups. The track first began playing on radio stations in March 2009, nearly a year ago.

Bassist Deck D'Arcy told us that "1901" is the band's tribute to a certain period in France's history: "We talk a lot about our French things. You know, we sing in English but we like to speak about, yeah, Europe and France and stuff like that. So, yeah, 1901 just -- it was a period where many things are still possible and it's kind of a modern era back in the day. So we like the 'modern-ness' of this period."

Phoenix has composed the music for the movie Somewhere, the newest project from Lost In Translation writer/director Sofia Coppola. This will the first time the band has written music for a film score. The film is due out later this year.

Phoenix picked up a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Album last month for Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix.
